Thammai may occur at the beginning of the sentence or at the end. Its position determines what kind of answer is expected. When thammai is at the end of the sentence, the expected answer is a verb phrase indicating purpose. When thammai is at the beginning of the sentence, one expects an explanation (which normally begins with phró) as to why certain actions took place or why certain situations exist.

When thěung occurs with thammai, it acts as an intensifier (without it the translation would be just "why don't you like him?").
